Mole (2001) Indie Underground movie (literally) ....

Mole (2001) is a extremely small budget indie horror movie that has been released by Scream House in United Kingdom I recently picked them all up from this budget label (Ravage, Binge & Purge, Ice from the Sun) to name a few and they are highlighting some of the independent directors of todays early work so with that in mind you need to remember these are probably the directors first movies before they got there creative juices flowing :)
Mole isn't really the case it is directed by Anthony Savini and Richard Mauro who didn't really go on to direct anything else both worked on more of the photography side which you can easily tell with this release there is a lot of photogenic shots and perfectly set up scenes with lighting etc...
So they story revolves around Susan Pei a reporter who with the help of her friends and a cameraman they are interested to discover if the tales around the communities living in the underground for years is true or just a myth ... because she wants to get that amazing story to impress her boss 1 more time after what it looks like many failed attempts in the past ..
This leads them all to venture into the unknown as no-one has a clear story on what or whom is lurking in the darkness, the story and script itself is quite interesting as I know as seeing it on documentaries myself that there are people I'm not sure on communities living in the underground for years that they call it there home. but with that said the story is interesting as it is based on true facts, so Susan and her friends trek down the underground through 1 opening to investigate this tale hoping they find at least some truth they can report on ...
What they stumble across are a few mad/malevolent and unwelcoming locals that really don't like being filmed which leads on to the terror and torment and fear of the darkness itself and trapped within the catacombs of the underground they fear they wont be able to make it to the surface to show there evidence ...
The movie itself is very atmospheric with a lot of haunting shots of the realisation of the truth behind the homeless living in these conditions in the American Underground system, makes you think that the authorities don't really care on the situation on these people just purely living in the darkness 24/7, saying that this movie with all the undertones of a good movie is still a really small budget Indie Horror movie and it shows its quite a shame really as it could of been a lot better also without giving away the ending it falls flat and makes the whole movie not really stick to its theme ...
On the whole a really good idea and could of easily been made a little better being longer (running at only 54 minutes) and a whole new ending :)
5/10 ...
